About Me

People say I'm:

I was a hard worker who built a business over 30 years and then sold it for retirement money. I made sure that my employees all went to the same firm together for a few years., I now find myself being approached bymany of my younger past employees who are seeking my help in getting on to better jobs or wanting recommendations to get back in graduate school. They do this by bringing me more into their private lives or joining me at lunches and dinners where we discuss what they want to do.
Describe Yourself:

I am enjoying playing the rich daddy role of helping these young and talented people out. Two have made it into Yale business school, one into Columbia, and a number back into graduate schools to advance their educations and get teaching positions.

You will note that most of these young ladies are Asian which supplies about 60% of the technical and graduate school talent in the US.

So, I am letting you in on the people I join for lunch or dinner, some imagined, who keep my life alive and from getting lonely.
On Gather, I'm Looking For ...:

Comments on some of the stuff I've written particularly the original article I prepared on the book about Huck Finn's father and how to read it.

You can see what books I am reading and trying to summarize. One of the most difficult is D.H.Lawerances "Lady Chatterly's Lover". Some of the young ladies enjoy discussing it, but if they are really interested in reading these things I start them on "Pride and Prejudice" or something like that for background.

Favorite Books, Writers, Genres:

I've worked in science and technology all my life and continue to do so after retirement in a position in geology and environmental studies at a local college., I am learning to read and enjoy fiction by past great american authors.
Favorite Movies, Actors, Genres:

Any of Kevin Costners baseball movies particularly "Bull Durham".
Favorite TV Shows, Actors:

There is none left. They keep showing the same thing over and over.
Favorite Places:

The Northlands of New Zealand, The Greek Islands, and anywhere there is a continuous small excursion boat (no more than 50 people please) cruise.
Interests and Activities:

Reading and/or listening to CD's of books. Sometimes a DVD related to a particular book. Teaching myself the mandolin now that I've found a great instructional DVD. This in place of loosing touch with the violin due to arthritic fingers.
Wish List:

., To get through the next aging medical "crisis" before it interrupts another trip some place.

If I ever get the NSF grant to go to Antarctica, it is possible to leave from New Zealand or South America it depends on where in Antarctica you are headed. Personally, though if it did end up being New Zealand I would rather spend my time seeing the Yellow-eyed penguins than go to the North Island, which I have been to already. Not that the North Island is not worth visiting again, but my college research paper was partially on the yellow-eyed penguins, so it would be great to actually see them. In the end, though, I would prefer to end up going from South America and end up on the Antarctic Peninsula, though.
